Artist's Comments

This was drawn mostly to take The GIMP for a test drive. Considering this is the first pic I ever made in that program, I don't think it turned out too bad. I did the ENTIRE pic in GIMP - I didn't do the outline in Flash like I usually would have done.

Working entirely in raster -sucks- when you're an accomplished vector artist. XD;;

While I was drawing it, I envisioned that this young male anthro lion just got expelled from his pride for some reason, a pride that he wanted to be the King in. But now, he's just a nomad, left to fend for himself.

The background is intentionally pretty smudgy, since I've seen similar styles used in other African-type pics. Not sure how well it fits with the main character, but eh, I didn't even PLAN on doing a background in the first place. XD

And you'll notice that neither his hair nor his trenchcoat is black. It wouldn't have made much sense to put a bunch of black on him since I was testing how shading and stuff worked out in GIMP, heheh.

I think that it can be a pretty suitable replacement for Photoshop, and it's -free.- I'd recommend that you download GIMP if you want something that can compete with Photoshop.

The brown mane and coat work perfectly. =P As usual, this is awesome. The lighting is well done and I feel like I can touch the screen and feel the texture of his fur and clothes~ :giggle:

:giggle: I can't help but giggle at the name of the program. And, woo, art from Jen!
Anyway, I like this. The outlines are a bit rough - which looks a little odd with the smooth coloring and shading, in my opinion - but overall this is a very nice piece.
...Kinda' makes me want to sing Circle of Life

That lion reminds me of Alex from Madagascar for some reason. <.<

I LOVE the coloring. You gotta teach me how to use that goddarn program, I've had for months and the only thing I can do is transparencies...

...Okay. A sig. I'll think of something. Eventually.

Nice work. What program do you use normally? I'm a Paint Shop Pro 7 user myself, but I've got a copy of Gimp 2.0 on a CD from a magazine. If you ever use Paint Shop Pro it'd be interesting to hear how they compare :)

Wow. This is prolly one of the best anthromorphic pics to come outta you in a long time, Jen. His design looks very cool, and that background came out good as well.
